Abstract
409,190. Mercury-vapour apparatus. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. Aug. 30, 1933, No. 24034. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] The anode 1 and the control grid 6 are housed within an arc-guiding sleeve 8, and the grid is loosely held, to prevent distortion due to thermal stresses, at the lower edge of a separate sleeve 4 which closely surrounds the anode. The anode consists of graphite, and the grid and sleeve 4 of graphite or molybdenum. A grid in the form of graphite bars or perforated sheet metal is held in position by a graphite ring 12 screwed on the sleeve 4. The sleeve 8 may be polished, both internally and externally, to minimise radiation, and, when the sleeve 4 consists of a semi-conductor, e.g. silite, a heating resistance may be provided thereon to ensure a high temperature of the anode &c. The sleeve 4 is secured by the ring 5 at a relatively cool portion of the leading-in insulator 3. The sleeve 8 is secured to the cover of the apparatus with or without interposed insulation, and the limiting resistances in the circuit of the control grid may be dispensed with when the grid is formed of semi-conducting material. A non-sontrolling grid, preferably in the form of a cylinder, for deionizing the vapour may be disposed below the control grid.
