Abstract
261,763. British Thomson-Houston Co.. Ltd., (Assignees of Robinson, L. T.). Nov. 18, 1925, [Convention date]. Addition to 248,396. Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - In anode seals for vapour-electric devices as in the parent Specification, the anode lead is made hollow and a cooling medium is circulated in contact with the anode. The seal comprises upper and lower metal parts 11, 12, Fig. 1, sealed to and united by a vitreous or other insulating sleeve 10 and the hollow lead 2 passes through the part 11 and conuects it to the anode 1 and has a corrugated part 3 within the sleeve 10. The anode 1 is supported and insulated by an insulator 7 on parts 8, 9 on the wall 6 of the device and the part 3 absorbs stresses due to temperature changes. The hollow lead has a rigid part 4 with a flange 5 and with partitions 24 facilitating circulation of the cooling medium. The part 12 is clamped by semi-circular parts 13 and screws 14 against the part 0 to form a gas-tight joint. The anode 1 may be at the top of a cylindrical shield 15, Fig. 2, cut away at its lower end adjacent to the evacuated container 16 of a mercury-vapour rectifier, a mercury cathode 18 being supported on an insulated part 17 and chambers 19, 20 for circulation of cooling medium being provided. The anode may have a cup-shaped surface 21, Fig. 3, radial cooling-fins 22 and a screwed extension 23 to engage the hollow lead. A corrugated section similar to part 3 may be interposed between the seal in Fig. 1 and a cooling fluid condenser mounted at the top of the lead on a fixed support.
