Abstract

Condensers.-In a condenser with electrodes immersed in a gas, the distance between the surfaces of the electrodes is of the order of magnitude of the mean free path of the electrons in the gas, while the insulators supporting the electrodes are so arranged that gaseous ionization around the ends of the electrodes is prevented. All paths for electric conduction through the insulators are sufficiently long to prevent breakdown of the dielectric, even under high potentials. As shown, the condenser comprises concentric conducting-cylinders 10, 12 enclosed in a glass tube 14 filled with gas at low pressure. The cylinders are mounted on insulators 16, 18, each of which has a base 20 fitting the outer cylinder and a head 22 fitting the inner cylinder, the bases and heads being connected by reduced necks 24.
