Abstract

637,382. Thermionic valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 25, 1947, No. 5472. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge device comprises an envelope including an annular metal end wall 7 having a re-entrant portion, a lead-in conductor 12 extending through the re-entrant portion of the envelope and supported therefrom by means including an insulating seal, and a cathode, comprising a plurality of elongated conducting elements 13, supported from the lead-in conductor and contained substantially within an anode structure 1 forming a part of the envelope. The lead-in 12 supports one end of the cathode elements 13 and houses a cathode tensioning spring 23 ; it may be hollow to allow the circulation of cooling fluid through tubes 27, 28. The other ends of the cathode elements are connected to washer 19 which is supported by the conducting cylinder 20 attached to the end wall 7. Cylinder 20 is preferably slotted as at 21 to minimize stresses caused by thermal expansion. The end wall 7 may have a metal ring 35 bonded to it, a further massive terminal ring 36 being screwed to 35. Ring 36 has a large heat capacity and assists in cooling the seal 10 ; it may be provided with passages for cooling fluid. A disc 37 connected to lead-in 12 is separated from ring 36 by an insulating washer 39 so that it is effectively connected to it for high-frequency currents. The grid is supported from a cylindrical metallic portion 6 of the envelope by a cone 33. A tube 43 provided with apertures 44 directed towards the seal may be used to cool the seal between the end wall 7 and the glass portion 8.
