637,280. Condensers ; glass-to-metal seals. FERRANTI, Ltd., CHILCOT, A. L., WHITMORE, E. J., and BIGG, W. S. March 13, 1948, No. 7685. [Classes 36 and 37] A vacuum capacitor comprises two sets of coaxial tubular electrodes which are accurately aligned and overlapped to give a desired value of capacitance. The distance between the soleplates 10, 21 to give that value is assessed by adjusting soleplate 10 axially on an insulating guide rod and obtaining a corresponding reading in air. In assembly, the rod 34 of jig 33 replaces this rod, or a perforated tube may be used through which is supplied an inert gas to prevent electrode oxidization during the sealing processes. Electrodes 13, 14 and 22, 23 are mounted on the soleplates 10, 21 respectively, the assembly being sealed in a vitreous enclosure. In Fig. 5, edge 18 of the annular cap 17 is sealed to the top of the glass cylinder 20 by induction heating and an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen is passed into the bell jar 40 covering the assembly. The other end is similarly sealed and the capacitor may be evacuated through a copper or nickel tube 50 which is afterwards sealed by compressing between hardened cylinders. Silver-plated brass contact caps 52, 53 are secured to the soleplates.
