[Also in Group XL (c)] A variable capacitor having an exponential law comprises a conductive tube 88 containing a fixed electrode 91 and a movable electrode 93, both insulated from the tube. The movable electrode is mounted on a carriage 95 supported by balls 97, 98 on guide-rods 96. A steel ball on the movable electrode resiliently engages the groove on a lead-screw 89 such that when the carriage reaches the end of its travel the ball will lift out of the groove. Connection is made to the movable electrode by a spring 102.
