Abstract
689,998. Electric condensers. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. Jan. 16, 1952 [Jan. 18, 1951], 1437/51. Class 37. A gas-tight casing 1, Fig. 1, is filled with gas under pressure (e.g. nitrogen or sulphur hexafluoride) which acts as dielectric for a variable condenser comprising a fixed set of cylindrical co-axial plates 31, into the gaps of which can move a set of movable cylindrical co-axial plates 35; the movable plates 35 are fixed to a hollow shaft 32 moving in a hollow shaft 6, under the action of a rod 40 tracked up and down by a screw 48; a metal bellows 46, 47 embraces the rod 40 and maintains the casing gas-tight. The fixed plates 31 are insulated from the casing, and as shown, are connected to one set of flat circular plates 13 which cooperate with an intermeshing set of flat plates 8 to form a fixed condenser in series with the variable condenser. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the fixed condenser is dispensed with, and the fixed and movable coaxial cylindrical plates are connected to opposite ends of a casing whose side wall is of fuzed silica.
