Abstract

The self-extinguishing electric circuit breaker has a cylindrical body (10) of insulating material containing a high dielectric constant gas. It is divided into two chambers by a fixed partition (12). It has an arc extinction device consisting of a piston (14) which compresses the gas between itself (14) and the partition (12). The piston (14) carries a nozzle (18) which blows the gas escaping from the compressed volume onto the contacts (16, 22). A damping device (24) brakes the movement of the moving contact (16), the piston (14) and the nozzle (18) when they arrive at the end of their travel against the partition (12).
