Abstract

774,116. Variable capacitors. ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and WILSTEAD, G. H. Dec. 20, 1954 [Dec. 22, 1953], No. 35637/53. Class 37. An electrical capacitor, the capacitance of which may be made to vary periodically, comprises a sealed container in which are mounted a fixed electrode 1 and a movable electrode 2, the electrode 2 being supported by resilient spiders 4, 5 and being associated with a coil 6 which when energized with alternating current causes the electrode 2 to undergo a vertical reciprocating motion. An adjusting block 20 is provided; the position of this may be adjusted with respect to the lower end of the stem 3 of the electrode 2 and the reluctance of the magnetic circuit associated with the coil 6 adjusted correspondingly. After assembly, the container is first evacuated and then filled with an inert gas through the tube 36 which is then sealed. The electrodes 1, 2 are composed of stainless steel, the adjacent surfaces being optically flat and having a thin coating of gold deposited on them. The lower electrode 2 is connected to one of the terminals 35, the other two terminals being connected to the energizing coil. The stem 22 of the upper electrode serves as a terminal therefor being insulated from the casing which is preferably of steel by the glass seal 24.
