Abstract
589,215. Discharge apparatus. SHEPHERD, G. R. (Westinghouse Electric International Co.). March 20, 1945, No. 7001. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In a lead-in seal for electric-discharge devices, shown applied to a mercury-vapour rectifier having a mercury cathode 12, a solid anode 13, and a power-lead 20, the lead-in conductor 16 passes freely through a ceramic sleeve 18 which is sealed to the wall 14 of the housing 11. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the conductor 16 is preferably formed of steel, an eyelet 21 and cup 25 being sealed to a glass bead 19 on the lower end of the sleeve 18. The parts 21, 25 may be formed of alloy known under the Registered Trade Mark " Kovar " ; or metal such as tungsten may be used. The flanged end of the eyelet 21 is welded &c. to the bottom wall 14, a head 24 on the conductor 16 and a pin 27, carrying a contact-member 28, being similarly secured to the cup 25. In the modification shown in Fig. 4; the cup 25 is omitted, the conductor 16a being sealed directly to the glass bead 19a which, as in the other form, carries a metal eyelet 21a for attachment to the housing.
