Abstract
547,509. Metal-vapour apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 23, 1941, No. 6633. Convention date, July 12, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In discharge devices of the mercury pool cathode type, the make-alive electrode 5 is carried by a lead-in 14 passing through a bushing 10 which is mounted in tlre opening 6 of the container 1 by a flexible diaphragm 11 and is adjusted by screws 28 to position the electrode relatively to the surface of the mercury pool. The diaphragm is reinforced by metal rings 12, 20 by which it is welded to the outer end of the bushing 10, and is sealed to a glass ring 18, which in turn is sealed to a ring 17 welded or brazed to the lead in conductor. The outer edge of the diaphragm is clamped between a ring 25 and a flange 8 on a sleeve 7 welded to the container around the opening 6, an airtight seal being formed by soft metal rings 22. A sleeve 19 screwed on to the ring 20 forms an abutment for the adjusting screws, and may be closed by a cap 30 of insulating material. A washer 9 is seated in a recess 24 of the flange 8 and serves to position the bushing 10 and support the diaphragm against atmospheric pressure. An insulating bushing 13 spaces the lead-in 14 from the bushing and is screened by shields 15, 16 to prevent short circuit by sputtered material.
