Abstract

620,332. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan. 2, 1947, No. 132. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] The ignitor electrode projecting through the liquid cathode pool of an electric arc device carries a shield of insulating material which prevents sputtering of liquid above the level of the cathode cup. Cathode and anode cups 10, 11 of nickelcobalt-iron alloy are sealed to a glass cylinder 12 and a starter electrode 17 of tungsten coated with glass 19, 20 is sealed in neck 14 and projects through the cathode material, e.g. mercury. A dome-shaped cap or shield 21 of glass is carried by the igniter 17 leaving a gap 22 between the rim of the shield and the surface of the mercury. Cooling fins 23 are provided.
