Abstract
379,889. Disc.harge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Kallenbach, G. K. ; 211, Bradley Street, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 8, 1931, No. 28006. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] In an arc-discharge device in which the anode and cathode are mounted on opposite stems and a control electrode or grid surrounds the anode, charges on the envelope, due to the discharge in the space between the cathode and grid, are reduced by providing metallic members extending to the grid from the stem supporting the cathode. The anode 8 is mounted on a stem 3 and the cathode 5 on a stem 2, and a control electrode 15 surrounding the anode is supported partly on the stem 3 and has equally spaced rods 11 joined to a metal band 12 clamped around the stem 2 ; the rods being closer to the envelope and cathode than is the main part of the control electrode, prevent the formation of charges on the envelope. A heat shield 7 is secured to the supports for the cathode. A flanged metal member 10 on the grid excludes ionization from the annular space between the grid and the envelope. The grid lead is connected to the band 12. The filling may be mercury vapour, argon, helium, or neon at a pressure of 1-100 microns.
