Abstract
248,396. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Prince, D. C.). Feb. 28, 1925, [Convention date]. Metallic-vapour apparatus.-In mercury-vapour rectifiers and like vapour apparatus with an anode sealed through an opening in a metallic or other envelope, the seal comprises upper and lower metal parts 15, 16 connected together by a glass or vitreous sleeve 17 and the anode 7 is supported in the opening 2 by a metal part 5 and connected to the part 16 by a flexible or yielding conductor 18 passing through the sleeve 17, expansion of the lead 8 being thus allowed for and the weight of the anode prevented from bearing on the seal. The opening 2 in the metal wall may have two flanges 3, 4, the part 5 resting on the flange 3 and the part 15 being clamped against an aluminium or other ring 24 on the flange 4 by a ring 22. The lead 8 is surrounded by a porcelain insulator 9 between shoulders 10, 11, the insulator 9 being held against the part 5 by flanged members 12, 13. The lead 8 is screwed into the anode 7 and the conductor 18 is detachably connected to the part 16 and lead 8 by screw-threads 19 and screws 20, 21. The part 5 is integral with, or permanently fastened to, an anode shield 6 and the opening 2 is connected the interior of the rectifier by a vent 14. The part 16 is flanged as shown and the parts 15, 16 are of chrome iron or other alloy with similar coefficient of expansion and with a surface oxide combining readily with glass.
