Abstract
348,848. Discharge apparatus ; leading-in insulators. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Schmidt, A. ; 1147, Parkwood Boulevard, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) April 22, 1930, No. 12431. Convention date, April 23, 1929. [Class 36.] Mercury arc rectifiers, hot cathode rectifiers, &c., are provided with a seal consisting of glass 9 cast between two cylindrical metal members 1, 3, the latter of which supports an electrode 7, but is spaced therefrom. The member 1 is made of a metal having a coefficient of expansion greater than that of the glass, such as machine steel, and is copper plated on the inside to provide a surface which is wetted by glass when hot. The member 3 is formed of chrome iron. A soapstone spacer and insulator 10 retains the electrode 7 in position. The electrode 7 may be screwed into a boss 5 integral with the cap 4 which is welded to the member 3, or the electrode and connector 8 may be butt welded to opposite sides of the cap 4. Fig. 3 shows a.modified form of connector 8b which is soldered to a cap 4b soldered to the member 3b. The electrode 7 screws into a plug 5b. In a further construction in which no connector is required directly outside the seal the electrode is simply butt welded to the closed end of the member 3.
