Abstract

359,468. Metallic-vapour lamps. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. April 15, 1930, No. 11976. Convention date, June 25, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 39 (i).] in order to carry away the heat from the electrodes of a high pressure metal vapour arc lamp, each electrode is provided with a continuous metallic heat conducting path leading to the exterior of the lamp. Fig. 3 shows a lamp in which each end of the quartz tube 5 is closed by a metal cap 1 to which a brass or copper member 2 is soldered, the member 2 carrying cooling gills 3. The electrodes 7 are of zinc, cadmium, lead, bismuth, or other metal or alloy which is solid at ordinary temperatures. The caps 1 may be provided with an elastic portion as shown in Fig. 2. The caps are secured to the quartz tube by soldering them to a coating of silver or copper which is deposited on the tube by means of a metal electrode are and burnt in by a flame which acts in an oxidizing manner at the commencement of the operation and in a, reducing manner at the end. The coating may be strengthened by a further electroplating or spraying process. The caps may be made of nickel steel and the soldered joint may be coated with enamel. Instead of the cooling gills 3, the member 2 may be cooled internally by water. The electrodes may consist of mercury in which case the tube is bent.
