Abstract

488,370. Sealing metal into vitreous material. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., BRUNT, B. P., and DAVIS, C. E. Jan. 5, 1937, No. 320. [Class 36] An electric heating-device with sheathed wire heating- elements is provided with a terminal box 1 of corrosion-resisting metal such as stainless steel through one of the walls of which the ends of the heating-elements extend and to which the metal sheaths 4 are secured by welding, the ends of the resistance conductors 5 being secured to flexible leads 6, extending through the terminal box 1, which, after assembly of the elements in place, is sealed by fused glass 7 to insulate and protect the ends of the sheaths 4 and leads 6. The glass may be inserted into the box in the form of powder and heated until it melts, when it is compressed by a bush or plate 9 of refractory insulating material provided with apertures through which the leads are threaded, this bush serving also as a spacer for the leads 6.
