Abstract
606,932. Non-metal resistances; temperature-variable resistances; casings, enclosures, mountings, and electrostatic screens for resistances. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., WOLFSON, H., and SHEPARD, S. C. Jan. 22, 1946, No. 2098. [Class 37] A thermistor is characterized in that the thermistor bead 2 as shown in Fig. 1 is secured by means of electrically insulating material 3 to a metal base such as a copper disc 1. In a preferred method of making such a thermistor, the bead 2 and end sections of the connecting leads 4, 5 are enclosed by a fine glass tube 8, Fig. 2. The leads 4, 5 are welded temporarily at 9, 10 to a nickel sheet 11 on which then rests the tube 8 positioned centrally on the copper disc 1, Fig. 3. The sheet 11 is then heated to melt the tube 8 and form the glass seal 3 of Fig. 1. The leads are then detached from the sheet 11 after which the disc 1 may be coated with a resinous cement. In an alternative method powdered glass paste is used instead of the tube 8 and is preferred for constructions of indirectly heated thermistors, Figs. 4, 5, and 6 (not shown). A thermistor, having a higher power rating, Fig. 7 (not shown), utilizes a metal rod instead of the copper disc 1. Specifications 540,844, 541,922 and 545,679 are referred to.
