Abstract

580,759. Induction heating. BELLING & LEE, Ltd., and HEATH, C. W. Nov. 6. 1944, No. 21770. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A cartridge-type fuse or resistance comprises an openended tube 1 of glass or like insulating material containing a fuse wire or resistance element 2 arranged diagonally therein, the ends 5 of which are turned over the edge of the tube. A coating of metal such as tin is applied to the ends of the tube and metal end caps 3 are secured thereon by solder 4 preferably applied in paste form. Prior to the securing of the end caps 3, the tube 1 is exhausted, one method being to enclose the loosely assembled cartridge in a vessel 6 surrounded by eddy-current heating coils 8 in the planes of the end caps so that subsequent to the exhausting of the tube 1 through a pipe 7, the end caps 3 are fused in position by passing a radio-frequency current through the coils 8. Alternatively the tube 1 may be provided with a lateral branch for exhausting which is afterwards sealed off, Fig. 3 (not shown). The element may alternatively be passed through holes in the end caps 3 and soldered therein.
