Abstract

541,922. Resistors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 23, 1940, No. 12059. Convention date, July 25, 1939. [Class 39 (iii)] A resistor unit comprises a bead 10 of semiconductive material with embedded conductors 11, which is inserted in a glass tube and heated to 700‹-900‹C. until the glass fuses around the bead forming a solid rod 12. A heater coil 13 is placed around the rod, coated with a mixture of sodium borate 65 per cent. and aluminium oxide 35 per cent., or equal quantities of lithium and potassium borates, and the assembly heated to 700‹C. whereby the coil 13 is embedded in the cement 14. The unit may be enclosed in an evacuated glass bulb. In a modification, a resistor bead is coated with zinc or potassium borate which is fused by heating to 700‹-900‹C. The mass is inserted in a heater coil; again coated with metal borate, and heated to fuse the borate. The resistor may comprise finely divided mixtures of the oxides of nickel, manganese, and cobalt which are heat-treated according to the resistance properties desired.
