Abstract

597,741. X-ray tubes. STEPHEN. R. A. Sept. 7, 1945, No. 23060. [Class 39 (i)] (Also in Group XX] An X-ray tube has an annular target and a cathode located between cross-sections of the tube axially removed from the target and emitting a conical coaxial beam of electrodes to bombard an internal annular zone of the target. A glass member 1 and metallic members 2, 3 are sealed together, and the former carries a cathode filament coil 14 with getter filament 15, just behind an opening 12a, so as to give a conical divergent beam. An annular layer 8 of material of high atomic weight, e.g. tungsten or gold, is cast or plated on to the inside of the anode member 3 which may be slightly tapered, a disc 9 of beryllium and window 11 closing the envelope, the disc protecting the window from electronic bombardment. In a modification, the filament is more forwardly placed with respect to the cathode hood 12. In another modification, the tube comprises a major portion united to a metallic cylindrical anode tube carrying the annular target. Cooling liquid may be circulated over the anode member 3 and the window 11. The tube may be mounted in the end of an oil or gas-filled casing containing the supply transformers (see Group XX).
