Abstract

925,534. Semi-conductor devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 29, 1961 [June 30, 1960], No. 22921/60. Class 37. [Also in Group XXIII] A glass-to-metal seal incorporating two conducting members separated by the glass seal and in which at least one conducting member is formed wholly or mainly of copper at least at the region where it is joined to the glass, has the said region coated with a layer of an alloy of nickel and cobalt containing at least 5% of cobalt. The invention is applied to silicon junction rectifiers having an envelope consisting partly of a copper sleeve 2 in which is sealed by means of a glass bead 5 a coaxial, conducting nickel-iron-chromium alloy member 1, the composition by weight of the glass head being 56% of Si, 30% of PbO, 1.3% of A1 2 O 3 , 8.0% of K 2 O and 4.6% of Na 2 O. The inside surface of the copper sleeve 2 including the region of the seal is coated with 0.0005 inch thick nickelcobalt layer 6 by electroplating prior to sealing. The percentage of cobalt is preferably between 5 and 18. After the manufacture of the seal the outer end of the tube 1 is closed by flattening and is sealed by resistance welding, a wire being soldered to the outer end of the tube 1 to provide one of the terminals of the rectifier; the rectifier is completed by sealing a copper disc, carrying the rectifier assembly on one surface, to the outwardly projecting flange of the sleeve 2, e.g. by cold welding, with the assembly lying within the sleeve. The sealing is effected in an enclosure filled with dry gas to provide permanent gas filling within the completed device. The conductor 1, connected inside to a lead wire from the rectifier assembly, forms one terminal and the other terminal is provided by a copper wire brazed to the outer surface of the copper disc. Specification 851,068 is referred to.
