Abstract

746,963. Ceramic-metal seals electroplating. FERRANTI, Ltd. Sept. 2, 1954 [Sept. 9, 1953], No. 24897/53. Classes 36 and 41. [Also in Group XXII] A ceramic-metal seal is made by applying to the ceramic surface a film comprising a suspension of finely divided metallic carbide, firing the film in an atmosphere containing hydrogen to cause the carbide to form on the surface a strongly adherent layer which is partly or wholly converted to metal by said atmosphere, forming a metallized surface thereon which will be wetted by a brazing material, and brazing a metal member to the metallized surface. The carbide material may be tungsten carbide or a mixture such as tungsten and titanium carbides. The adherent layer may be metallized by plating with a metal which will bond thereto, such as nickel, cobalt or iron, and then with a metal to assist brazing, such as silver which is subsequently melted by firing in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. For example, the adherent layer may be nickel plated for 20 minutes at a current density of 0.07 amp./sq. inch., and then silver plated for 20 minutes at the same current density and fired in hydrogen at 1050‹ C. Alternatively the adherent layer may be coated with a film of like carbide material mixed with a less amount of finely divided metal which will bond to the adherent layer and be wetted by a brazing material, this film being fired in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. In a further modification the metallized surface may be formed by the application of a suspension of a metal powder and then sintering in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The metal member may be of nickeliron and may be nickel-plated and silverplated and then fired in hydrogen before being brazed to the metallized ceramic surface, silver being used as the brazing medium.
