Abstract

A carbide is bonded to iron or to an iron-based alloy by the use of a low melting alloy of Ni and P. The carbide may be applied as a cemented carbide powder and sintered in situ, or as a presintered preform. The Ni-P may then be applied by coating, spraying, or by placing a Ni-P preform on the carbide. The carbide/Ni-P is then heated to effect diffusion bonding. Alternatively, a paste of carbide, Ni- P, and organic binder is applied and heated to sintering temperature. Preferred carbides are TiC, WC and TaC.
