Abstract

551,174. Making compound sheets &c. JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO., Ltd., and CHASTON, J. C. June 30, 1942, No. 8978. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Soldering.-Silver is united to steel by first coating the steel with copper and then contacting the silver with the copper coating and heating the parts to a temperature above 780‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The steel may be coated with copper by electrodeposition or by melting a thin layer thereover in a reducing atmosphere and the silver may be applied to the copper coating by electrodeposition or by placing a silver sheet or a shaped silver article in close contact therewith. The atmosphere may be inert or reducing and the temperature is preferably about 800‹ C.
