Abstract

764,693. Lightning arresters. E.M.P. ELECTRIC, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1954 [Jan. 6, 1954], No. 368/54. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A disc or block of non-linear resistor material for surge or lightning arresters has a thin peripheral layer of ceramic material. This ceramic layer, which may be of gypsum-based material, is fired on at a temperature not higher than 300‹ C. The example of Fig. 1 shows a non- linear resistor disc 3 with face electrodes 4 and peripheral ceramic layer 6. The disc 3 may have chamfered edges as at 7 and the annular zone 5 surrounding each electrode coating 4 has a width between the limits of # and # inch. Fig. 2 shows a 3-disc assembly suitable for use in the surge arrester construction disclosed in Specification 730,710. In Fig. 2 the ceramic coating 6 occupies the V-shaped gaps 8 formed by adjacent chamfered edges 7. Specification 730,634 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
