Abstract
1,274,887. Surge diverters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 9 Sept., 1969 [16 Sept., 1968], No. 44425/69. Heading H2H. A lightning arrester comprises a currentlimiting gap in series with a valve resistor, and has an extra valve resistor which can be shunted out after a time delay following sparkover of the current-limiting gap and before said gap clears and seals off. In the arrangement of Fig. 1, the extra resistor 4, together with a horn gap 8 and grading resistor 10, is connected in series with the main gap 2 and resistor 3. In operation, a surge causes both the gap 2 and the horn gap 8 to sparkover and the arc in gap 8 is then blown out through positions 13 and 14 until it forms an arc 15 between a pair of auxiliary contacts 9, when the latter will shunt out both the gap 8, which is now extinguished, and the extra resistor 4. In other embodiments, the grading resistor 10 may be replaced by a blowout coil, and the extra valve resistance may be split into three series connected resistors. Also, the main arrester may be of the two column flip-flop type. The extra resistor ensures that a system voltage is not reduced too sharply when a surge occurs, and its shunting out prevents too high a discharge voltage building up across the arrester, which is particularly suited for use with a high voltage D.C. system.
