Abstract

1319924 Cold cathode discharge tubes SIEMENS AG 6 Dec 1971 [8 Dec 1970] 56470/71 Heading H1D A surge diverter comprises two main electrodes 1 each of which defines a main discharge gap 5 with respect to an earth electrode 2, the two main electrodes also defining a secondary gap 6 having a lower breakdown voltage than the main gaps 5. The lower breakdown voltage may result from the shape and spacing of the electrodes and/or the activation of their discharge surfaces. The intended use of the diverter is with each of a pair of lines connected to a respective main electrode so that an overvoltage on one line will be discharged to earth and any consequent cross voltages on the pair will discharge across the secondary gap. Alternative constructions are with coaxial cylindrical main electrodes surrounded by a coaxial hollow cylindrical earth electrode, Fig. 1 (not shown); and a pair of flat electrodes with a partially intervening flat earth electrode, the main electrodes being brought closer together at one portion to form the secondary gap, Fig. 2 (not shown).
