Abstract
1411492 Spark gaps M-O VALVE CO Ltd 21 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 14138/73 Heading H1D A spark gap arrester as described in Specification 1,021,782 has electrodes 10, 11 in a gasfilled housing comprising end caps 1, 2, insulating sleeves 4, 5 and a central conducting portion 3, and each electrode 10, 11 carries an insulating sleeve 19, 20. Sleeves 4, 5 have metallized bands 8, 9 whereby they are brazed to end-caps 1, 2 and portion 3. Electrode 10 is made in two parts 12a, 12b, 12c and 13a, 13b, 13c of stepped construction as shown. Part 12a is brazed to end cap 1 and part 12c to part 13a. Electrode 11 is similarly constructed. The device is filled with gas, and sealed at 23, and gap 16 has the same D.C. breakdown voltage as gaps 17, 18. The ceramic sleeve 19 fits around sections 12c, 13b of electrode 10, and the corresponding sleeve 20 fits around sections 14c, 15b of electrode 11. In use, end caps 1, 2 are connected to respective lines of an electrical supply, and portion 3 is grounded. If overvoltage occurs, the gap between first one, gap between an electrode and portion 3, then the other, breaks down. During discharge, metal is sputtered on to the inner surfaces of members 4, 5, and this may reduce the breakdown voltage; but for the effect of sleeves 19, 20 by restricting sputtering on to the inner curved surfaces of members 4, 5, by restricting movement of the cathode spot of the discharge, and by increasing the distance between sputtered end surfaces 21, 22 of sleeves 19, 20 and the free surfaces of the corresponding electrodes 10, 11. An arrester with a breakdown voltage of 400 V is filled with a 10% hydrogen-argon mixture at 50 torr; the radial spacing between electrode sections 12c, 13b, 14c and 14b and the internal surfaces of members 4, 5 is 0À95 mm.; and sleeves 19, 20 consist of 98% alumina and have internal and external diameters of 2À92 and 3À98 mm. respectively. Sections 13c, 15c may be of large diameter as indicated or may be of the same diameter as sections 13b, 15b.
