Abstract
1410836 Spark gaps M-O VALVE CO Ltd 21 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 14137/73 Heading H1D A spark-gap arrestor comprises metal endcaps 1, 2, a metal central tube 3 and ceramic parts 4, 5, assembled to make up a gas-tight cylinder. Electrodes 6, 7 are brazed to the end caps, and electrode 6 has an opening, subsequently sealed at 10, for filling the arrestor with gas. In use, the end caps 1, 2 are connected respectively to two lines of an electrical supply, and the central tube 3 is earthed. When overvoltage occurs between the lines or between a line and earth, a spark gap breaks down. Since the arrester may fail without giving any indication, there is provided at each end a pair of ring-shaped members 13, made of a fusible material, (e.g. an alloy of 3 parts Su and 2 parts Pb) and shouldered at 14 to support a ceramic cylindrical spacer 15. These parts are covered by a sleeve 16 made of a material which shrinks when heated. If the arrestor is overheated, a hole may form in the tube 3 so that the gas escapes and the device cannot conduct. Before this can occur, the members 13 melt. Sleeves 16 contract so as to cause the molten material to flow between the end cap 1 or 2 and the central tube 3, so that one of the lines is earthed.
