Abstract

1429060 Cold-cathode tubes TELECOMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRIES Inc 20 Aug 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 39331/73 Heading H1D A three-terminal voltage surge arrestor comprising a pair of insulative tubes 22 each encompassing a part of an elongate electrode 32 extending therethrough, a third tubular electrode 42 maintaining the tubes 22 in coaxial spaced apart relationship and defining a closed chamber therewithin and between opposed ends of the electrodes, the shortest perpendicular distance between any two electrodes being the same, the outer end of each elongate electrode being supported in an end cap 52 mounted on the outer end of the respective insulative tube, is manufactured by a method described in detail with reference to Figs. 1-6 (not shown). Alumina tubes 22 are inserted in a tube of Ni-Fe alloy, brass or Cu and sealed thereto by melting solder rings 30 inserted in circumferential grooves in the tubes 22. Tapered portions of stops 36 on the Cu electrodes 32 are engaged with welding flanges at each end of the metal tube to centre the electrodes prior to welding. Portions of the metal tube are then removed, e.g. on a lathe, to leave gaps 44 and 46 separating the earth electrode 42 from the caps 52 connected to the electrodes 32. The gap D between electrodes 32 is equal to the gap 41 between electrodes 32 and 42. The arrestor may be filled with argon.
