Abstract
540,848. Lightning arresters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 15, 1940, No. 13051. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1939. Drawings to Specification. [Class 38 (iv)] In a lightning arrester, for high tension lines, of the arc expulsion type consisting of two electrodes extending towards one another within an insulating tube so as to leave an arc gap shorter than the distance between the electrodes one of the electrodes being located near the HT line and the other earthed, the voltage of the line electrode in normal working is reduced, to eliminate corona within the tube, by shunting the gap with a high resistance. This resistance is constituted by a sizing coating on the exterior of the tube consisting of a varnish and finely divided semi-conducting material such as carbon black, graphite, tin oxide or silicon. Carbide distributed in it, so that its resistance is of the order of one megohm per inch length between the electrodes.
