Abstract
1,171,423. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 2 May, 1968, No. 20875/68. Heading H1N. To prevent excessive overvoltages when a vacuum switch is used to interrupt reactive circuits, the switch is provided with a trigger gap 50 operable to initiate an arc-over of the gap between the switch contacts 17, 18, and control means 60 to cause the trigger gap 50 to spark-over when the voltage across the contacts exceeds a value of between 2À0 and 3À5 times the normal operational line-to-earth peak voltage. The control means may comprise a voltage divider, formed by capacitors 62, 63, and a semi-conductor bidirectional diode 67 connected to the voltage divider in series with the gap 50 so that when the voltage across the capacitor 62 is sufficient the diode 67 breaks down to permit the capacitor 62 to discharge through the trigger gap 50. Resistors 68, 69 may be connected in parallel with the capacitors. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown) both contacts 17, 18 have associated trigger gaps and bidirectional diodes.
