Abstract
1,235,713. Vacuum switches; arcing preventing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 3 Oct., 1968 [5 Oct., 1967], No. 4700l/68 Heading H1N. [Also in Division H2] The direct current circuit interrupting arrangement of Specification 1,133,037 is provided with a surge suppressing circuit 99 connected on the supply source side of the switch 25. The circuit 99 comprises a gap device 100 and a non-linear resistor 102. The device 100 has a trigger gap 151 which is supplied from a pulse source 101 under the control of a switch 103 near the instant when the current through the main switch 25 reaches zero. The current which then flows through circuit 99 limits the recovery voltage. The normally charged capacitor 35 which is discharged through the main switch 25 when a gap device 38 is triggered is also used to cause interruption of the current in the circuit 99, the capacitor 35 being discharged through the device 100, inductor 108 and resistor 107 when a gap device 200 is triggered by a pulse source 201 when a switch 203 is closed, e.g. ten milliseconds after the device 100 has been triggered. The circuit 99 may also serve as a lightning arrestor, the device 100 being triggered when the voltage across a unit of a capacitative voltage divider Fig. 4 (not shown) exceeds a predetermined level. A further surge suppressing circuit 399 is connected across the D.C. circuit on the load side of the switch 25, this circuit comprising a further gap device 300 and non-linear resistor 302.
