Abstract
1334171 Arcing preventing in switches HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 28 May 1971 [10 June 1970] 18169/71 Heading H1N A D.C. circuit interrupting arrangement coprises the parallel combination of main contacts 24, an electronic switch 40, first auxiliary contacts 42 with resistor 44, second auxiliary contacts 46 with resistor 48, and a capacitor 52 across the contacts 46. Control means (not shown) cause the consecutive opening of the contacts 24, 42, 46, the opening of each set of contacts being accompanied by the conduction of the electronic switch 40 so that the contacts are short-circuited and the gap between them can de-ionize, the conduction of the switch 40 being terminated in each case by the control means. The restrictors 44, 48 may be non-linear resistors and the capacitor 52 is of the oil filled kind and capable of arresting the final voltage surge. The electronic switch 40 may be a crossed field switching device or liquid metal cathode switching device as described in Specification 1,243,655.
