Abstract

1,086,119. High voltage switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 3, 1966 [May 10, 1965], No. 19663/65. Heading H2B. A vacuum switch n in series with a resistor R is connected across a main break e and is arranged to be closed during the closing of the main break to prevent voltage surges. As shown, two main breaks e are connected in series and operated directly by a linkage b from an insulating rod a. Each main break e has a resistor R connected across it by a vacuum switch n operated by an overcentre linkage f arranged to close the vacuum switches for a period during the upward movement only of rod a. The main breaks e may also be vacuum switches. Each break may be replaced by several vacuum switches in series (Fig. 4, not shown). Several other arrangements are described (Figs. 3, 7, 8) in which various combinations of vacuum switches, resistors and also voltage grading capacitors are enclosed in a plurality of similarly shaped vertical or horizontal insulator columns. The vacuum switch may remain closed until after the opening of the main break.
