Class 38(2) An electric induction device such as a transformer or a ballast inductor for fluorescent lighting has a shell type core composed of co-axial coils of spirally wound strips of magnetic material forming an inner portion 2, two yoke portions 4 and an outer portion 6, one or more windings 3 being arranged within the space bounded by these core parts. When two or more windings are used, magnetic shunts, constructed similarly to the yoke portions 4, may be placed between them. The inner and outer core portions 2, 6 may, if desired, be wound in two pieces and arranged with an air gap between them. Since the flux travels at right angles to the planes of the laminations in the yoke portions the magnetic circuit will contain a number of small air gaps; thus a conventionally arranged air gap may be dispensed with. The yoke portions 4 may be wound on the inner portion as shown, or directly on the former 1 and may be enclosed within the outer portion 6 or extend to the external diameter of the outer portion. The device may be completely enclosed by a cover member.
