769,461. Transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 4, 1954 [Nov. 12, 1953], No. 31952/54. Class 38 (2). The magnetic core of a transformer suitable for supplying arc discharge devices comprises a loop 2 made of wound grain-orientated magnetic strip, and two open-ended magnetic members 8, 9 disposed on opposite sides of the loop with their ends adjacent to diametrically opposite positions on the respective sides of the loop. Primary and secondary windings 11, 12 carried by the loop are separated by the members 8, 9 which form a magnetic shunt. Shunt air gaps may be formed by insulating spacers 10 between the ends of members 8, 9 and loop 2. The windings 11, 12 may be wound on the closed loop, or slipped on after cutting it at 13. The loop 2 and the members 8, 9 also of wound strip may be held together by bands 15, 14. In a modification a central primary winding may be separated from two secondary windings, one at each end of the loop, by two pairs of shunt core members, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). In an alternative arrangement, the loop may form the shunt and the two other core members may bear the two windings, connected in autotransformerreactor relationship, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown).
