Abstract
660,089. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 30, 1949 [Jan. 15, 1949], No. 33371/49. Class 38 (ii). A transformer comprising a core of E and I laminations 3, 4 is provided with high leakage reactance by disposing the secondary winding 7 concentric to the primary winding 6 on the central limb 5 with at least one magnetic shunt member 8 formed of a plurality of laminations, separating the primary and secondary windings, this shunt member 8 lying in a plane different from that established by the main core legs, and outside the core windows. As shown, the shunt member comprise L- shaped laminations having the foot of alternate L's mounted at either end of the core and arranged parallel to and lying in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the main core laminations, preferably on opposite sides of the centre leg. Alternatively, I or U-shaped laminations may be used. The gap between the end of the shunt member and the main core may be maintained by insulating material 13 and kraft board 12 may be wedged between the shunt member and coils. The transformer may be used in conjunction with a discharge device to provide the ballast.
