Abstract

1428708 Transformers GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 July 1973 [28 July 1972] 35434/73 Heading HIT [Also in Division H2] A transformer 1 for a discharge lamp ballast circuit comprises primary windings 3a, 3b and secondary windings 5a, 5b wound on the legs of a magnetic core 2 formed of a stack of magnetic steel laminations. Slots 9, 10 reduce the cross-section of the secondary core portion to produce localized saturation and a magnetic shunt 11 provides leakage reactance in the transformer. The shunt 11 is spaced from the core legs by gaps 13, 14 which may be air gaps or spaces containing insulating material such as kraft paper. Auxiliary induction coils may be used instead of the shunt 11 and the slots 9, 10 to provide the necessary leakage reactance and secondary magnetizing reactance.
