Abstract

914,857. Transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 27, 1960 [Jan. 28, 1959], No. 2956/60. Class 38 (2). The three - limbed core of a transformer or choke is formed of E and I laminations, each E lamination having one leg 14 or 15 (Fig. 2) narrower and longer than the other two, the E laminations being secured single or in packets 2 (Fig. 1) reverselyarranged so that cooling flutes 2<SP>1</SP> project from the core. Some or all of the I laminations may be offset at the centre to provide air gaps 22 and partial air gaps 5 may be formed differentially in the E laminations to constitute continuous windows in the built-up centre leg. The transformer may be potted in asphalt and silica and enclosed in a casing (Fig. 4, not shown). The laminations are clamped together by bolts 3 and angle members 4 and a rectangular stack of laminations may be arranged between the windings to form a magnetic shunt. The E laminations are cut without appreciable waste by arranging for the material forming the wide legs of one to constitute the space between the legs of another, as shown in Fig. 5.
