Abstract

650,108. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1947, No. 30945. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1946. Drawings to Specification. [Class 38 (iv)] A starting arrangement for a discharge lamp having thermionic electrodes includes an electrode arranged external to and on or near the surface of the lamp envelope and supplied from an auxiliary winding on the transformer pruviding the lamp discharge current. The transformer is provided with high leakage reactance and the auxiliary winding is so disposed on the transformer core that the voltage of the auxiliary winding is automatically reduced when the main lamp discharge occurs. The electrode' may comprise the support or the reflector for the lamp and connected to the winding through a capacitive coupling and earthed. The transformer may be of the auto type with one point of its winding earthed and with the winding portions supplying respectively the discharge current and starting electrode either side of the earthed point. In a 3-phase system the lamps are connected across the outer portion of the phase windings of a star connected transformer and the starting electrodes are connected to the neutral point, if necessary through a capacitive coupling, and " earthed." The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement whereby a number of lamps may be supplied in parallel through their respective transformers with the starting electrodes connected to a common auto-transformer through a capacitive coupling and " earthed." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
