Abstract
493,298. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., RANDALL, J. T., and RYDE, J. W. April 5, 1937, No. 9633. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XX] A high-pressure mercury-vapour lamp having an envelope of quartz or other glass transmitting radiations between 2,200 and 4000Š is enclosed within a glass bulb carrying on its inner surface a layer comprising at least two luminescent materials mainly excited by radiations of different wavelength, whereby the efficiency of the lamp is at least 15 per cent greater than in the absence of the layer. In an example, an 80 watt lamp having an efficiency of 38 lumens/watt is mounted in a bulb 110 cms. in diameter which is coated with a mixture of equal parts by weight of zinc orthosilicate and zinc sulphide, both luminescing green, at a surface density of 0À02 gram. /cm<2> . The bulb may be slightly frosted. If desired the layer may include luminescent material emitting red light for colour correction, but the prescribed increase in efficiency must be obtained.
