Abstract
496,143. Discharge lamps; luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., RANDALL, J. T., and RYDE, J. W. May 27, 1937, No. 14753. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XX] A discharge lamp consuming power W is enclosed within a sealed outer jacket coated internally with one or more specified luminescent materials and the surface area of the jacket is made so much greater than is indicated for power W in the Figure that when the lamp is operated with the bulb exposed freely to still air at 15‹ C. the output of the luminescent material is not less than 50 per cent of the output of the same material when maintained at 15‹ C. The specified materials are calcium, magnesium or zinc tungstates, cadmium silicate, zinc orthosilicate luminescing green or zinc-cadmium sulphide luminescing orange-red ; these materials show a considerable falling off in efficiency, both reversible and irreversible, when their temperature is raised above 200‹ C. and curves showing this effect are given. Other luminescent materials may be added to those specified, but the light from the added materials must not exceed that from the specified materials. The lamp may be a high-pressure mercury-vapour lamp consuming 80 watts, when the outer jacket coated with a mixture of calcium tungstate and zinc-cadmium sulphide may have a surface area of 708 cm.<2> ; if desired, the diameter may be still further increased to 15 or 20 cms., when the lamp is suitable for use by itself as a domestic lighting unit.
