Abstract

622,655. Velocitymodulated tubes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Nov. 23, 1943, No. 14655/46. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1941. Divided out of 622,634. [Class 39 (i)] Velocity-modulation is carried out by a number of harmonically-related fields so as to approach more closely the ideal non-sinusoidal curve. An electron beam from cathode 74 is first modulated at a fundamental frequency by resonator 78 and immediately enters resonator 81, where it is further modulated at the second or third harmonic frequency, the phases and amplitudes of the two modulations being chosen to simulate the ideal sawtooth waveform. Further resonators tuned to other harmonics may be added. Energy is given up in resonator 90, from which a part is fed back to resonator 78. Energy to maintain resonator 81 is taken off by auxiliary harmonic resonator 86. A focusing coil 100 is provided and the spent beam impinges on a conical collector surface 92. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), resonators 86, 90 are replaced by a single sphericalsegment resonator oscillating simultaneously at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies, as in Specification 640,899. Resonators 78, 81 may also be replaced by a similar resonator. Specifications 523,712 and 531,067 also are referred to.
