Abstract

534,749. Measuring phase difference. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 26, 1939, No. 28780. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1938. [Class 37] [Also in Group XXXV] A condenser 29, across which a voltage depending on the phase difference between the output of an oscillator 10 and a reference oscillation is to appear, is charged through a rectifier 26 by impulses from a composite wave representing the source of the reference frequency, which may be that of a power line, and a frequency preferably in harmonic relation thereto derived by reduction from the oscillator. The condenser can discharge' where the amplitude of the composite wave falls, but only during the impulses. Between impulses the voltage remains constant. The discharge circuit includes a rectifier 31 and a resistor 36 ; its impedance remains high until the cut-off bias on the grid 33 is held off due to a connection from the oscillator through condenser 42 but is always high in relation to the impedance of the charging circuit. The voltage of condenser 29 thus changes with changes in the relative phase of the two oscillators. As shown the voltage of condenser 29 is arranged to vary the bias voltage of the grid of a variable-Á valve 46 acting as a reactive circuit in parallel with' the tuning inductance to control the oscillator. Specification 458,161, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
