Abstract

584,465. Frequency modulation. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Sept. 11, 1944, No. 17352. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1943. [Class 40 (v)] Relates to circuits in which a reactance valve is used to modulate or vary the frequency of a crystal-controlled oscillation generator. As shown, the piezo-crystal 2 has two electrodes 3, 4 connected between the grid and cathode of the oscillator 8 and two further electrodes 5, 6 are connected across the inductance 21 in the anode. circuit of a reactance valve 20. A tapping 31 on the inductance 21 is connected through resistance 30 and condenser 28 to the grid of valve 20 to provide appropriately phased grid voltages so that the valve simulates an inductive reactance whose mean value is controlled by the grid bias source 22 and which is modulated by the rectified output from microphone 33 applied through resistance 25 to the grid. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the crystal has two electrodes only and is connected in the oscillator grid circuit in series with a variable condenser and the anode inductance of the reactance valve.
