Abstract
630,050. Phase and frequency modulation. PHILCO CORPORATION. Aug. 20, 1947, No. 23087. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1946. [Class 40 (v)] Phase modulation is effected by applying a carrier wave to the grid 13 of a grid-controlled valve 10, which has a reactance 18 of one sign in its cathode lead, and a reactance 19 of opposite sign either connected or inherent between grid and cathode; and the modulating signal E is applied to a grid of the valve 10 to vary its mutual conductance, thus giving a phase-modulated carrier across the output terminals 31, 32 of the cathode reactance 18. If the reactance 19 is twice the cathode reactance 18, amplitude changes are avoided. In a modified circuit a coil in series with a blocking condenser replaces the capacity 19, and a capacity shunted by a radio-frequency choke replaces the coil 18. If the condenser 24 is of such capacity that its reactance at modulating frequencies is much smaller than the resistance 22, the modulating voltage reaching the grid is integrated, and the output wave at 31, 32 is a frequency-modulated wave.
