Abstract
628,901. Frequency modulation. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 21, 1947, No. 13661. Convention date, June 25, 1946. [Class 40 (v)] In a resonant circuit in which the tuning is varied by means of a capacitor in series with a variable resistor, the resistor comprises a diode, metal rectifier or other device not having a control grid, the current through which is controlled by a series-connected grid controlled tube. As applied to a frequency-modulated oscillator, the two halves of the tank circuit 17, 18, 19 of a push-pull pair of oscillators 1, 2 are shunted by circuits comprising effectively capacitor 21 in series with diode 22 and resistor 26 in parallel, and capacitor 24 in series with diode 23 and resistor 27 in parallel. The reactances of byepass capacitors 34, 35 are negligible at the operating frequency. The value of resistor 26 is such that the impedance of 26 and diode 22 in parallel is equal to the reactance of capacitor 21 at the unmodulated frequency of the oscillator. Resistor 27 is similarly chosen. The internal resistances of the diodes are varied in accordance with the modulating signal at 32 by passing the anode current of the amplifier 28 through them. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the variable resistor may be a carbon microphone. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
