Abstract

426,227. Wireless signalling. ARMSTRONG, E. H., 211, Central Park West, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 24, 1934, No. 2435. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1933. [Class 40 (v)] Frequency or phase modulation is effected by aperiodic circuits, the phase shift of the carrier wave being directly proportional to the amplitude and inversely proportional to the frequency of the signal. The output from a constantfrequency oscillator 1, Fig. 1, is connected (a) through an amplifier 2 to a resistance 3, and (b) in parallel to two amplifiers 4, 5 coupled at 6 to the signal source 26, and at 9, 10 to an amplifier 12 which feeds back to the resistance 3 currents displaced in phase by the signal components. As shown in Fig. 3, A represents the signal voltage and B the corresponding plate voltages impressed on the valves 4, 5. The vector MN at C represents the voltage across the resistance 3 in the output of amplifier 2 when no signal component is present, whilst ON and NP represent the phase-shift over one cycle of signal current. The resulting phasemodulated carrier is fed through further amplifiers, filters, and current-limiters to the transmitting aerial. Since the time taken to shift the phase is inversely proportional to the frequency of modulation, a correction circuit 27, 28 is introduced at the signal input. This feeds to the transformer 6 a voltage which is inversely proportional to the signal frequency, thereby maintaining constant modulation for high notes and low. The initial small phaseshift may be increased, say for television, to any desired extent by frequency-multiplying, combined if necessary with heterodyning. Specifications 290,642, [Class 40 (v)], and 426,228 are referred to.
